I recently had a conversation with a potential referral about starting a new divorce...
The case was fairly straightforward--short term marriage; no kids; limited assets. At some point during our conversation (around the time I quoted a very reasonable retainer) I was asked "can't I just do this myself and gets the forms online?" And the answer is: Yes, of course you can do it yourself, just the same way as you could read Grey's Anatomy to perform your own open-heart surgery. What's that you say? That you would be crazy to attempt to perform heart bypass surgery on yourself? If you had a heart problem you would see a cardiologist and follow their recommendations because you might die if you don't. And while it is doubtful that you will lose your life by doing your own divorce, if you don't do it right, the consequences could be dire and far reaching. It is always more expensive to clean up a mess than it is to do it right the first time.
